Benidorm should be considered a World Heritage Site. A French academic feels that Benidorm should be seen in the same light as Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal and the Acropolis.

Comments made at the 12th International Benidorm Tourism Forum suggest that the city's distinctive high rise skyline is of cultural importance, reports The Telegraph.

"Benidorm is the Dubai of Europe," said Professor Philippe Duhamel, a geography expert from the University of Angers.

"It is unique in Europe, is known worldwide and is a remarkable site for what is understood by mass tourism. For many years everybody spoke badly of Benidorm, but with time it has gained value, as has happened in other examples of architectural world heritage."

As a result of what Duhamel terms its "unique collection of skyscrapers", Benidorm has been nicknamed Beniyork by local residents.

Manuel Perez Fenoll, the mayor of Benidorm, welcomed Duhamel's comments: "After many years of misunderstanding, there are now experts who recognise the Benidorm model."

Among Benidorm's architectural contributions is a 52 storey building, while a 55 storey skyscraper is currently under construction.
