Eco-conscious Brits 'holiday at home'
Eco-conscious Brits 'holiday at home'People are increasingly staying in the UK for their holidays as environmental concerns mount, according to one industry body.

Peter Hampson, director of the British Resorts and Destinations Association (BRADA), explained that ecological worries are becoming increasingly "mainstream" and this is starting to be reflected in people's holiday decisions.

He said: "We're not talking about people abandoning foreign holidays en masse, we're talking about people thinking twice about whether to take two foreign holidays or maybe have a UK holiday instead."

Mr Hampson added that people are also increasingly fed up with lengthy waits at airports and, because of this, are looking for alternatives to air travel.

Recent events at Heathrow's Terminal 5 have only served to underline this feeling, he concluded.

According to the United Kingdom Tourism survey, Britons took 15.7 million domestic trips in August 2007.

It also found that they spent a total of almost £3 billion on their holidays.
