Drivers advised of new German 'Green Zones'

Drivers advised of new German 'Green Zones'
Drivers advised of new German 'Green Zones'Holidaymakers travelling by car in Germany need to be aware of new 'Green Zones' that have been introduced across the country, advises one car rental company.

Europcar has warned tourists planning on driving in some of Germany's cities that their vehicles need to comply with the new rules. Drivers are now required to display an 'environmental badge' on their car, and any vehicle that is found to be without one will be subject to a fine of €40.

David McNeill of Europcar explained how this would affect holidaymakers: "The law applies to vehicles driven into Germany from other countries, as well as German registered vehicles. Travellers should therefore ensure that any vehicle crossing the border into Germany complies by displaying an environmental badge."

McNeill concluded that it was essential that visitors are aware of the new regulations and check before they depart, so as not to be caught out. Furthermore, he pointed out that all Europcar vehicles already have the necessary badge.

Green Zones are now in place in several cities, including Berlin, Hannover and Cologne. Many more cities are scheduled to be covered by the new scheme in the coming years, including Munich, Bremen and Frankfurt am Main.
