Cyprus targets new tourists
Cyprus has always been a popular holiday destination but now the island's Cultural and Special Interest Tourism Association (CSITA) is hoping to attract new visitors.Reuters reports that the CSITA is to start offering a wide range of religio-cultural packages to help appeal to a different type of visitor as well as showcasing the number of cultural attractions in Cyprus such as monasteries, shires and saints' relics.
Cyprus has largely been seen as a beach holiday resort due to its very favourable climate but its long history means that it was also an important location throughout history.
George Michaelides, chairman of CSITA, explained: "We are more than just a sand and sea and sex destination."
However, there is little doubt that Cyprus will remain a firm favourite with those looking to relax on the beach for two weeks and soak up the island's atmosphere. A recent report from the European Union concluded that Cyprus has some of the cleanest beaches in Europe.
