Cruises rise in popularity
Cruises rise in popularityHolidaymakers are taking to the seas, according to new research, which reveals that cruises are becoming more popular among Brits.

Last year, 1.2 million UK residents went on an ocean cruise, according to figures from the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA).

This was up from 522,000 in 1997, showing that cruises have doubled in popularity during the period.

And travel experts expect that this trend will continue to rise, with the PSA predicting the number will go up to 1.3 million and 1.5 million next year.

"Last year proved strong for the UK cruise industry, but next year is poised to be even better, with fantastic growth coming from the launch of 12 new or refurbished ships," said Bill Gibbons, director of the PSA.

"The PSA has increased its membership by four additional cruise lines during the year and now has 37 cruise line members. There is a very wide range of ships and destinations available and truly a cruise for everyone."
