Coffee smells trigger Southwest Airlines emergency landing
A Southwest Airlines flight made an emergency landing due to coffee smells. The Florida-bound aircraft landed at Long Island airport after a member of the crew reported an electrical smell.
The Southwest Airlines flight was en-route from Connecticut to
Orlando on Sunday morning, according to The Daily Telegraph. When a flight attendant reported a suspicious smell, the plane made an emergency landing at Long Island Islip MacArthur Airport.
The 131 passengers and five crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft. Upon examining the plane, it was discovered that the smell had been caused by a coffee maker at the back of the aircraft.
"Anything that might have touched the burner might have caused the electrical smell," said Chris Mainz, a spokesman for the airline. Mainz described as "fairly unusual" but added that it was not the first time it had happened.
