Travellers taking holidays in Malta now have the option of a new method of transport. The world's first sea-going coach, the Amphicoach, was unveiled on the island last week.

The Amphicoach can reach speeds of up to 70mph on land and eight knots (9mph) across water, according to The Daily Express. The novel vehicle, which will help people renting apartments in Malta get around the island, can seat up to 50 passengers.

The coach has a depth sounder to avoid any underwater obstacles. It is also installed with nautical navigation equipment and an autopilot function. Safety equipment onboard the Amphicoach includes life jackets, boat hooks, life belts and flares.

Powered by one diesel engine both on land and at sea, the coach also has a marine jet drive. When the Amphicoach enters the water, the driver switches from a steering wheel to a joy stick. A catamaran style twin hull stabilises the coach on the water.

GS Specialist Vehicles took six years to make the Amphicoach and aim to build 12 per year. They have already delivered an order to Hungary and a delivery is also scheduled for Belfast.
