Heathrow Terminal 5 opened for business early this morning and is expected to host a total of 380 flights during its first day of operation.The terminal, which is the new home of British Airways flights operating out of the airport, can handle up to 30 million customers a year.
Willie Walsh, British Airways chief executive, said: "I know that our customers will love the space, comfort and convenience that Terminal 5 offers and I believe that people can look forward to a much calmer and more enjoyable way of travelling in the months ahead."
He added that the new terminal will "put Heathrow back on the global travel map".
Terminal 5 was officially opened by the Queen on March 14th.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sir Nigel Rudd, chairman of airport operator BAA, claimed that the new terminal will "breathe new life into Heathrow" and will allow the redevelopment of the rest of the hub to continue.
