Strike at Liverpool John Lennon Airport planned next week
Flights at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport are likely to be disrupted next week. Union members have voted to strike on August 20.

The continuous strike action will begin at 4am next Thursday. Members of the GMB union are protesting over the threat of compulsory redundancies by ServisAir, which provides ground services at the airport.

According to The Independent, the Liverpool airport strike will affect Ryanair flights as well as KLM, Flybe and Wizzair services. All GMB members employed as baggage handlers and other apron staff will be involved in the strike.

There was a very high turnout at the ballot and almost 90 per cent voted in favour of industrial action. The GMB's Terry Mellow said: "GMB members are very angry and have voted overwhelmingly to take action to get these compulsory redundancies withdrawn."

The union is keen to avoid disrupting the travel plans of the public and has urged ServisAir to reconsider its proposed actions. The GMB has also asked the airport's owner, Peel, to intervene and put pressure on ServisAir.

Liverpool Airport's Robin Tudor comments:"The industrial action by staff employed by airline handling agent Servisair commenced last Thursday (20th Aug) and has been continuing ever since. This industrial action continues to have no impact at all on flights departing the airport, due to the robust contingency plans in place by Servisair who have brought in replacement staff from other airports to cover the duties of those in dispute. Talks are ongoing and hopefully this dispute will soon be resolved, but the message for travellers using Liverpool John Lennon Airport throughout this dispute and for the duration, is that it is 'business as usual'. Passengers wanting the latest information should check the airport website: www.liverpoolairport.com."
