Silverjet suspends operations with immediate effect
Silverjet suspends operations with immediate effectAll-business airline Silverjet has suspended operations after failing to receive further investment. The carrier announced that as a result, operations must be suspended with immediate effect.

The troubled airline's last flight took off from Dubai for London Luton at 7.30 am (BST) this morning. Silverjet was expecting to receive $5 million in new capital from Viceroy Holdings LLC, but the funds have not materialised.

Writing on the airline's website, chief executive Lawrence Hunt expressed his sorrow at the demise: "We extend our sincerest apologies to those of you who have travel plans with Silverjet in the future and at present." Hunt recommended that affected passengers seek alternative travel arrangements with other airlines and contact their credit card companies for information on a refund.

In a statement the carrier said that it had limited working capital reserves and that advances under the loan facility were urgently required. Nevertheless, Hunt is hoping that they will be able to recommence operations in the future. In his note to passengers he said that the airline is "working actively with new investors to inject new funds", adding that they hope to be able to offer a very "sivilised" way of flying once more.

In the meantime, according to The Independent, both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are hoping to help stranded passengers.
