Regional airports 'offer passengers more choice'
There is less need for people to travel to London in order to connect to international flights than ever before, it has been claimed.According to Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director at Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBA), the rise of regional airports means that people now have more choice in where to travel from and to.
"As [regional] airports introduce more destinations and more choice with a wider number of scheduled airlines, there is now less need for people to trawl down to London to connect to flights worldwide," he said.
"There is not a shadow of a doubt" that regional airports will become even more popular in future, Mr Hallwood added.
At the moment, LBA is looking to introduce routes to New York and other US destinations, which will allow travellers to connect to flights serving airports across North America, he concluded.
In March, the USA and EU introduced an open skies agreement. The document should lead to increased competition between airlines and, because of this, cheaper fares.
