Open skies 'should mean cheaper fares for US-bound flights'
People flying between Europe and the USA can expect to see lower fares from the end of March, it has been claimed.James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the Air Transport Users Council (AUC), explained that an open skies agreement signed by both the US and the EU should give customers "better choice and cheaper fares" when it comes into effect in just over a month's time.
He said: "When Europe was liberalised the e-market brought in airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair and the air fares dropped dramatically, so hopefully we'll see a similar thing with the open skies in going to America."
Mr Fremantle added that the liberalisation of the air transport market was, in general, a good thing for consumers.
A report by the Civil Aviation Authority states that when the EU-US agreement comes into effect, 90 per cent of international flights from the UK will be covered by an open skies or open aviation area-style agreement.
