New York tops Heathrow destinations
New York is the most popular destination for those flying from Heathrow, according to a spokesperson for the airport.Damon Hunt said the
US city was just ahead of Paris, France and Dublin, Ireland.
He said: "That list [of popular destinations] has stayed fairly static over the last couple of years."
Mr Hunt added that Heathrow was "a hub" meaning that many people used it to transfer to other destinations so around 35 per cent of people did not even leave the airport.
Other popular destinations included Amsterdam in the
Netherlands, Frankfurt in
Germany, Hong Kong and Dubai.
Heathrow is the biggest airport in
England and, in terms of passenger traffic, the busiest in
Europe.
Research by Travel Mole found that UK residents made around 70 million trips abroad in 2007.
It also reported the number of people taking long-haul flights had increased by around ten per cent.
