Monarch Airlines faces summer strikes
Monarch Airlines could be hit by strike action this summer. Holidaymakers travelling during the peak summer season could find their flights disrupted as the union Unite prepares to ballot its members over industrial action.

According to the Press Association, the ballot will be held in July and has been sparked by arguments over pay. If the Monarch Airlines strike action goes ahead, flights to/from London (Gatwick and Luton), Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin could be affected as staff walk out.

Unite's national officer for aviation, Brian Boyd, told the press agency: "Monarch faces the prospect of a crippling strike at the height of the holiday season." The union is urging Monarch Airlines to give its members a lump sum, rather than a pay rise. It is also fighting for cabin crew to receive an extra allowance while they are working, as pilots do.

However, the airline argues that the demands are not possible in the prevailing economic climate: "Given the current economic situation and its impact on the aviation industry, pay increases and additional benefits for employees are unachievable at the present time."
