Higher fuel costs 'may impact upon flight availability'

Higher fuel costs 'may impact upon flight availability'
Higher fuel costs 'may impact upon flight availability'The rising cost of fuel may see airlines reduce the number of routes they offer, according to one expert.

James Fremantle, industry affairs manager for the Air Transport Users Council, said it is possible that airlines will cut schedules due to the current economic "tough times".

"It's disappointing for passengers, because passengers have benefited from the extra choice of routes and so forth for the last few years," he stated.

However, if fares go up as a result of rising costs, travelers may not wish to travel as much, he added.

Mr Fremantle's comments follow the news that British Airways is planning to ground some of its aircraft this year.

The Times reports that from October, the airline will cut the number of planes it operates to reduce the number of under-capacity flights.

According to the newspaper, the move is believed to have been prompted by higher fuel costs.
