High-speed London-Scotland rail link could boost Europe rail breaks and reduce internal flights

Plans for a high-speed rail link between north and south Britain have been unveiled. The £30bn train project would link London and Scotland, including links to Heathrow Airport and the Channel Tunnel.

The high-speed London to Scotland rail link has been proposed by the 2M Group. The service would also allow people travelling to holiday homes abroad to connect to Heathrow Airport and to High Speed 1, the 186mph link from London to the Channel Tunnel.

This would increase the possibility of city rail breaks in Europe; holidaymakers would be able to travel direct from Scotland, the north of England and the Midlands to holiday homes in major European cities, including Amsterdam, Lyon and Paris. The planned rail link could also reduce the need for internal connecting flights at British airports.

Edward Lister of Wandsworth Council in London, which is one of the local authorities within the 2M Group, said: "We are delighted to publish the proposals because we want a debate...It's time for some imagination in UK transport planning. We don't pretend we have all the answers but at least we're asking the right questions."

Anyone travelling from Sheffield to a holiday apartment in Paris on the train could do so in just over three hours, while Glasgow to Paris would take just over five hours. The 2M Group is campaigning against the expansion of Heathrow Airport.
