Flight choice boosted by budget airlines
The increasing number of budget airlines has directly contributed to the opening up of access to more global destinations for British holidaymakers.Regional airports have also been boosted by the rise in low-cost flights and online bookings, according to the Airport Operators Association (AOA).
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) recently revealed that there are in excess of 100 million passengers at regional UK airports annually, a record and almost triple the figure recorded in 1990.
Neil Pakey, deputy chair of the AOA and managing director of Liverpool John Lennon airport, commented: "The low-cost market has really risen and it's just opened up access to so many places across Europe; it's opened up the UK regions for Europeans to come in and visit us."
He explained that it had also "been very beneficial to the regions right across Europe", saying that the increase in flights had been the "lifeblood to some of those regions and their economies".
The CAA revealed that the strongest growth in travellers continues to be in international scheduled flights, which saw a doubling of passenger numbers between 2002 and 2006.
