easyJet celebrates 10 years at London Stansted
One of the major low-cost airlines this week reached a significant milestone. The familiar orange-branded easyJet yesterday celebrated its 10th anniversary at London Stansted.
The budget carrier's inaugural flight from the
London airport , to the
Italian capital,
Rome, took off on May 21st 1998 under the brand name 'Go'. Go later merged with easyJet in August 2002, resulting in one of Europe's largest no-frills airlines.
David Osborne, easyJet's UK general manager, commented on the past decade: "The way we travel has dramatically changed over the last 10 years. Now, more people than ever before have the opportunity to fly thanks to our affordable fares to key destinations across the UK and Europe. I am proud that easyJet has played such a pivotal role in uniting Europe and enhancing people's lives as well as generating a huge economic benefit to the local community."
Demand from passengers led to the continued expansion of the airline at Stansted, with routes added to major city airports, summer sun and winter ski resorts, as well as to destinations catering for passengers travelling for business purposes.
The past 10 years have transformed Stansted into one of easyJet's "most successful bases"; the carrier can count 522 staff and 14 permanent aircraft stationed at the airport. Furthermore, since taking to the skies at Stansted, easyJet has carried 39 million holidaymakers to 26 European and domestic destinations. The airline yesterday continued to expand its UK operations, announcing a new route from London Gatwick to the
French city of Nantes.
