Carbon labelling 'will educate travellers'
A system of carbon labelling for journeys will give consumers "a greater understanding" of the environmental impact of their trips, it has been claimed.Simon Stokes, business development consultant at Carbon Footprint, explained that a system of labelling would allow consumers to compare the level of emissions an excursion would generate and help them decide on their method of travel, something which might influence transport providers in future.
He said: "It is important to remember that carbon labelling goes further than just educating consumers - it puts real pressure on the corporate bodies responsible in all stages of the supply chain to reduce emissions."
To help achieve this, Mr Stokes suggests that carbon emissions should be printed on all travel tickets.
According to the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, flying from London to Paris typically generates 244 kilograms of CO2 per person.
It added that anyone opting to take the train instead will generate just 22 kilograms of CO2.
