Aviation 'can achieve sustainable growth'

Environmental activists are "wrong" to claim that an expanding aviation industry is incompatible with efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, it has been claimed.
Neil Pakey, chairman of the Airport Operators Association (AOA), explained that the industry is already taking significant steps to become greener.
He said: "The aviation industry, through the Sustainable Aviation Programme and the EU emissions trading scheme, is committed to a range of measures which will deliver real improvements in environmental performance."
Mr Pakey added that aviation tax should be emission-based as this would provide an incentive for the industry to cut the amount of carbon dioxide it produces and, in turn, help the sector grow in a sustainable manner.
In related news, airport operator BAA this week applied to construct a new full-length runway at Stansted Airport.
BAA says it plans to spend more than £6 billion over the next five years in order to improve airports across the UK.
