Airlines 'could slash fares'
A small downturn in the fortunes of airlines may benefit consumers, one expert believes.James Fremantle, industry affairs manager with the Air Transport Users Council (ATUC), said budget airline Ryanair had responded to recent problems in the industry by cutting fares, something he said could be copied by other operators.
He explained that if flights were leaving with empty seats, then companies would drop their prices in order to fill them up.
Mr Fremantle said: "If they slash fares then consumers are going to have some real bargains for the next few weeks or so."
He added that he had "no real concerns" over the level of consumer demand and even if an airline were to cut the number of routes it was operating, then another provider would step in to offer choice.
This week, Ryanair issued a profit warning but said that it felt it would emerge from any recession in a "stronger" position.
