World Tourism Day 2011 - linking cultures

September 27 2011 will mark the 31st annual World Tourism Day. Its focus this year, set by the UNWTO, is on how travel promotes the experience and understanding of cultural diversity, according to Travel Daily News International.
Travelling, whether it be trekking through the jungles, relaxing on a beach or renting a holiday home abroad, has become a widespread pastime, reaching across nations in all continents. 940 million people globally visited a country that was not native to them last year, exposing them to the delights of foreign cultures in their various forms.
Interactions that take place when tourists set foot on foreign soil are uniquely experienced through travel, and it is this that the UNWTO seeks to encourage and preserve.
The World Tourism Organisation, a specialised agency of the United Nations, advocates this year the management and protection of all forms of culture according to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism; emphasising the significance of its role in encouraging individuals to travel and, more recently, the way in which it can be used to promote sustainable tourism and preserve and enrich cultural wealth.
World Tourism Day aims to increase the global awareness of the importance of tourism and its contributions to society, culture, politics and the economy; working towards the directives set by the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals and demonstrating the role of tourism in achieving these goals.
