FCO advises against all but essential travel as Hurricane Ike hits Cuba

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against all but essential travel to Cuba. The FCO issued the advice as Hurricane Ike hits Cuba, leading to mass evacuations.
In their
latest travel advice for Cuba the FCO recommends that travellers avoid all but essential travel to the country due to the potential danger of
Hurricane Ike. Hurricane Ike was predicted to hit Cuba as a category four hurricane, with wind speeds in excess of 130mph and extensive rainfall.
It has been forecast that Hurricane Ike will move north west throughout the island and may affect all areas including the capital,
Havana. Anyone already in Cuba and those planning on
travelling to Cuba should listen to local weather forecasts and media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.
According to The Times, nearly one million people in Cuba have fled their homes and more than 9,000 tourists have been evacuated from holiday resorts. Carlos Lage, Cuba's vice president, said that the country was "preparing for a strong hit".
Hurricane Ike hit Cuba late on Saturday night after causing devastation in
