Flights to and from Greece cancelled as air traffic controllers strike

Air traffic controllers are holding a 24 hour strike in Greece. Hundreds of flights to/from the country have been cancelled as a result of the industrial action.
The strike began at 10pm last night and affects all airports in
Greece, reports The Telegraph. No flights will be permitted to/from the airports for the duration of the strike.
British Airways has cancelled seven flights to
Athens and Thessaloniki. A further 15 flights to/from the same cities have been cancelled by
easyJet. This includes eight from
London Gatwick and Luton. Services with the budget airline to/from Athens and
Berlin,
Milan and
Paris are also affected.
Olympic Airlines has also cancelled all their services to/from Greece today, as has
Aegean Airlines. Both British Airways and easyJet are offering full
refunds for those affected. Passengers flying with easyJet can also opt to re-route to their final destination at a later date if they wish.
The air traffic control strike comes as Greece experiences
violent demonstrations after police shot a 15 year old dead on Saturday. The unrest has spread from Athens to Thessaloniki, Patras, Trikala and Ioannnia as well as the islands of
Crete, Samos and
Corfu.
The Foreign Office is advising travellers to exercise
extreme caution in urban areas and warns that demonstrations are likely to continue throughout December. Anyone due to travel to Greece should contact their airline for the latest information.
