A third runway at Heathrow is the 'obvious' solution to London's airport congestion

A third runway at Heathrow is the "obvious" solution to airport congestion, a report has concluded. Despite the environmental impact, Heathrow is the favourite candidate for extra capacity.
The
Aviation Services And The City report concludes that Heathrow is the "obvious preferred candidate" for expansion, reports The Telegraph. The report, commissioned by the City of London Authority, rules out the expansion of Stansted Airport.
"The obvious preferred candidate for expansion to meet the City's needs is
Heathrow, through delivery of a
third runway," York Aviation, author of the study, writes. "However, this option appears to have the most significant cost in terms of local environmental impacts."
Expanding Stansted would have fewer environmental implications, but it would be a "sub-optimal option" in terms of
London's economic needs.
The news comes after it was announced that the opening of the new
Heathrow East terminal could be delayed by up to a year, raising fears that it will not be ready for the
2012 Olympics. The terminal will replace Terminals 1 and 2. The hold-up has been blamed on the problems with Terminal 5 and the delays moving British Airways' operations to the terminal.
