About Sliema
Once a tiny fishing village, Sliema expanded during the 19th century to become one of Malta’s main coastal resorts, along with neighbouring St Julian’s. The town has a long association with the upper classes and retains its affluent feel, and, unusually, you’ll find that English is the main language spoken here.
The compact town centre is best explored on foot, and with street names written in both Maltese and English, it’s difficult to get lost here. If you fancy relaxing, there are some great spots for swimming and sunbathing in secluded coves and on rocky beaches.
May to June and September to October are the best times to visit, with temperatures ranging from 19-24 degrees centigrade – you’ll find the sea here is warm enough for swimming all year round!
What to do
Scuba diving and snorkelling are popular activities here, and there are a number of dive centres in and around Sliema. Dive sites in the area include Fortizza Reef, a great spot for underwater photography, and the wreck of the HMS Maori, sunk in 1942. Most dive centres cater for all abilities and are happy to rent equipment.
For something a little more laidback, why not enjoy a day of shopping at Malta’s largest mall? The Point, just east of Sliema, is situated on ground where the Great Siege of 1565 was fought.
With long sunny days and balmy weather, dining al fresco in Malta is a must. In Sliema, you’ll find 18th-century seafront villas and cosy restaurants with leafy piazzas, serving traditional Maltese cooking. Seafood here is ridiculously fresh, and you can also try local dishes such as Timpana, a pie filled with pasta in a meat and tomato sauce.
Top Sliema travel tips
For those looking for lively nightlife in St Julian’s, July and August might be a better time to visit than the spring and autumn months, as many clubs and bars stay open later during the summer.
Getting around the area is easy thanks to a reliable bus service, and if you want to head for St Julian’s or Valletta, there are regular buses – although you could always take the scenic route and travel by ferry to Valletta from Tigne Seafront in Sliema.
