The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily has an abundance of natural and historical treasures. The island’s rich history – its periods under Greek, Arab and Norman influence – have left a unique legacy. Palermo, the foremost city on the island, is best experienced by strolling down the city’s oldest road – Via Vittorio Emanuele and appreciating the Moorish architecture and the Botanical Gardens which Goethe used to frequent. Messina is a modern city, cradled by the spectacular Peloritani Mountains. The astrological clock of the Duomo is an attraction in the town, but most travellers escape to Taormino, a town famed for its beauty standing in the shadow of Mount Etna. The town also offers wonderful shopping. Across the plains of Catania, Syracuse was once foremost amongst Mediterranean cities, with a plethora of Greek remains and the massive Teatro Greco which still holds classical performances. Off the coast, the Aeolian Islands make for a great ferry trip, with each part of the archipelago offering its own unique charm.
