"Quality Didn't Match Cost"

1) We've rented many houses/condos around the world with nary a problem. 2) We were OK with the crickets, mega-wasps and scorpions in the house... after all, there were no screens on the windows. 3)… More

Thank you for writing and bringing these items to our attention. We will certainly discuss them with the owner. While some of the comments might be appropriate, I feel it necessary to respond to those that I feel are not appropriate or , in some cases, even accurate, and which seem to reflect a desire to exploit the platform more than to be constructive. 1 and 2: Window screens, for instance, are a particularly North American thing; they are relatively rare in Europe, and you will not find them in most country houses, particularly ones where life is (delightfully) led outdoors most of the time anyway. Italy, and this house, are lucky enough to offer this delightful advantage, and open doors and windows aim to merge the indoors and outdoors. This house is advertised as a country property with wonderful outdoor living and dining. The country is shared with the native inhabitants, who include animals, birds, and insects. 3: The house is advertised as a country house, and as a private residence. We will take your point and improve the Guest Note. However, as there is a maid who comes daily to clean and do the laundry, you actually had someone who would do the laundry for you (as you were told in the Guest Note) and who would also have been happy to show you how it worked, and explain any picture buttons to you. Even without being an English speaker she would have been delighted and capable of showing how to work the TV remote, etc. 4: The owners had not been in the house prior to your arrival. It had been fully prepared to make you feel welcome. Yes, the wine and fresh produce was complimentary. Did you really imagine that the wine on the table was anything other than a welcome gift ? Commendable Rentals always has wine and often fruit, bread, and first breakfast left as a welcome for the guests. Of course you were to use the fresh fruit, the local olive oil, and all the things that were part of your welcome! Personal bathroom toiletries should not be left by the owner, and I will find out why they were, but we do leave a nice supply of soap, shampoo, etc. 5: Pamela, the person who greeted you and who came daily, is a lovely, and rather shy person. In Italy, few country people speak English, but many of our guests from around the world find it part of the charm to communicate about simple things and are proud of doing quite well. Many guests that come speak languages other than English, and you could not expect Pamela to speak all of them. If you could not resolve an issue with the local person, you were invited to contact Commendable Rentals so that we could help. You did this and were helped on several occasions. We supplied both US and Italian numbers for your convenience. 6: This is a country road; you should go slowly; it is not a ravine, and your comments are an exaggeration. 7: Commendable Rentals is ALWAYS available to answer your calls, as we did. You could use either US or Italian numbers and get an English speaking person. Often the US number gets forwarded to Italy, so you may well have been speaking to someone in Italy when you called (but as the problem was solved on the spot, the comment seems irrelevant) 8 and 9: San Cassiano dei Bagni is full of small speciality food shops which thrill most people, as does driving through the Tuscany countryside! Yes, it is wonderful! Great restaurants and historic buildings, too. 10: The house sleeps 10 people. The price you mention of $500 was accurately, €350 a night , i.e. for 10 people, €35 per person per day! That hardly seems pricey. It is in fact a bargain! The comments about the stains, the mildew, the furniture, seem to be in contradiction to the comment that the house was very clean. However, we will investigate these. The Gardener comes several time a week, and certainly cleans the pool when he comes. 11: In addition to being in the countryside, the house is owned by someone very well known in the media and in the arts in Italy. She has created an amazing and artistic space where she entertains people in the arts and media. The design of the principle rooms is both modern and dramatically artistic. These qualities seem to have gone unnoticed by the reviewer. The house is certainly for kids! As in most homes, toddlers must be watched carefully, and we do not recommend it for toddlers. 12. Damage Insurance instead of a security deposit is relatively new, but now in quite common use for rental properties. It relieves the renter of the obligation to put up a considerable amount of cash to be held against possible damages, avoids any arguments about who did what when, and eliminates debates about the cost of repairs or replacements. It is economical and we have had very positive responses to it from both renters and owners. The above said, please accept that we take your comments seriously; we will investigate and improve a number of points. Meanwhile, we hope that our comments in response will enable you to have a broader perspective on the property.
