The Rhone area offers everything the holidaymaker could want; from a flurry of activities such as fishing, canoeing and watersports on the mighty Rhone itself, to the busy city of Lyon, France’s gastronomic capital. To the east the Alps offer some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Europe and some of the world’s most prestigious ski resorts, including Chamonix and Meribel, are among the 70 ski stations in the region. Lyon, Grenoble and St Etienne are all university towns, the first offering excellent art galleries and architecture. In the south of the region, the Ardèche offers stunning landscape and a warm climate, playing host to a range of outdoor activities. The region remains one of the most scenic in France, with unspoilt wooded areas covering much of the countryside. The Beaujolais vineyards wind away to the north, and local delicacies include the area’s cheese and nougat.
