Tourists 'don't just want to lie on a beach'
Holidaymakers are becoming more adventurous when it comes to choosing their destinations, says one industry body.Claire Lilley, head of research at Holiday Which?, said: "People are looking for experiences as part of their holiday.
"People are going on maybe three or four holidays a year and they don't always just want to lie on a beach."
She added that eastern Europe was "still booming" and that
Bulgaria and
Turkey were "on the agenda a lot more".
However, she said that beach holidays would "always be really popular", with destinations such as
France and
Spain continuing to attract tourists.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) Portugal and Turkey are doing well in terms of early bookings for 2008 holidays.
It also predicted that
China,
Australia,
Singapore and
Colombia would all be popular destinations in 2008.
Research carried out by ABTA found that UK residents made almost 70 million trips abroad in 2007.
