The great winter get away
The wash-out that was the British summer has led to more people looking to get away for some winter sun, says an industry body.Sean Tipton, spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), said: "The main reason holiday bookings rose quite substantially over Christmas and the New Year was because of the appalling weather we had over the summer."
He added that bookings for winter holidays increased by half a million to 3.5 million. Something he described as "quite a substantial increase".
Mr Tipton added that two thirds of those getting away were looking for sunshine with the remaining third wanting guaranteed snow.
Before Christmas, ABTA predicted that a record number of holiday makers would leave the UK for a Christmas get away.
It expected destinations such as the
Canary Islands,
Egypt and Goa would be popular.
