Sustainability 'key for tourism'
Sustainability 'key for tourism'Tourism development needs to be planned carefully or resorts risk becoming "spent" destinations, one expert has warned.

A report in the Navhind Times states that Syed Liyakhat, speaking at an international seminar entitled Natural Area Tourism: Impacts, Planning and Management, has urged members of the industry to commit to sustainable management techniques or risk damaging both the planet and their trade.

According to the paper, Mr Liyakhat, a programme coordinator for an eco-tourism management project based in Bangalore, gave the example of the Andaman Islands.

Its beaches, once beautiful, are now "littered with plastic bottles and other plastic waste", he said.

However, it appears that the message might be getting through already, with one of the conference's organisers quoted by the publication as saying that eco-tourism has witnessed an "explosive growth" since the 1980s.

Furthermore, the San Jose Mercury reported in January that Mexico is looking at expanding its eco-tourism market, while officials from both the Philippines and Vietnam have also recently announced plans for large-scale sustainable tourist developments.
