Spain set for budget airline battle
Spain looks set to become the new battle ground for low-cost airlines, with several other airlines saying they will also step up operations in the country, bringing good news to Spanish holiday property owners.Following Ryanair's announcement last week voicing its intent to increase the number of flights to Barcelona, easyJet, Spanair, Air Europa, Vueling and clickair are all now expected to focus on increasing their business in Spain, with many analysts expecting an all-out price war.
EasyJet is reportedly ready to invest £68 million in making Madrid Barajas airport its centre of Spanish operations, while Barcelona-based Vueling has announced that it will increase the number of flights it operates from 16 to 40.
This is expected to significantly increase the volume of air traffic into the country, particularly from UK airports, with over 16 million Brits already making the trip each year.
And for those owning Spanish holiday homes, significant benefits are also likely, with independent holiday makers looking to book their own accommodation more likely to opt for budget airlines over chartered flights.
