Smoking bans 'will be welcomed by holidaymakers'
Smoking bans 'will be welcomed by holidaymakers'Smoking bans in France and Germany should prove a "refreshing change" for holidaymakers, according to one interest group.

Amanda Sanford, research manager for Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), said: "[People] will, I'm sure, welcome the fact that they can now dine and socialise in smoke-free environments in other countries too."

She added that she didn't think that any such bans would have a big influence on where smokers chose to go on holiday.

Ms Sanford said: "They [smokers] might think: 'I might have to think again and chance my choice' but I think it's going to be a very small minority."

Ireland was the first country in Europe to introduce a comprehensive smoking ban, with Norway following shortly after.

Italy banned workplace smoking in 2005 and Belgium only allows smoking in cafes and bars if they have ventilation installed and are at least 50 square metres in size.

Greece has the highest proportion of adult smokers in Europe - 45 per cent of the population enjoy a cigarette.
