Access to Sardinia from the north of England and Scotland is to be improved. Ryanair will open a new base in Cagliari next year, linking the city with Manchester and Edinburgh. A further base will be opened in Alghero.

Ryanair's new Cagliari base will open in March 2009. The base in Alghero will be opened at the same time but will not serve UK destinations.

Owners of holiday homes in Sardinia will benefit from 19 new Ryanair routes - 11 international and eight domestic. Britons will be able to fly to Cagliari from Edinburgh as of March 31 2009. Flights to the base from Manchester will commence on April 1 next year.

"This expansion will make it more affordable for millions more European visitors to travel to the beautiful island of Sardinia," said Ryanair's chief executive Michael O'Leary.

As well as opening two new Sardinian bases Ryanair will also increase its domestic routes and frequencies from Rome's Ciampino airport.

From December 4 this year the budget airline will introduce a route from Rome to Trapani in Sicily. It will also add a fifth daily return flight from Rome to Milan as of November 24 2008.
