More Brits moving 'down under'Latest figures show more and more people leaving the UK, with Australia the top destination for emigrating Brits.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that 400,000 people emigrated last year and many chose to escape to 'the land down under'.

According to the Daily Mail, just over half of those leaving Britain were British citizens. At 207,000 in total, this is the first time the number of migrants has risen above the 200,000 mark in a single year.

"The remainder of emigrants (194,000) were non-British citizens, who left the UK in 2006 having lived here for at least a year," the ONS said.

The numbers leaving Britain have reached the highest point since monitoring of emigration numbers began in 1991.

New Zealand, France, Spain and America join Australia as the top five destinations for emigrating Brits.

Just over a quarter of those who were leaving the UK had definite job plans while 21 per cent were planning on looking for work on arrival.
