Holidaymakers look to IsraelIsrael is increasingly popular as a tourist destination and is looking to attract ever more visitors.

The Jewish Chronicle reports predictions that 2008 will see a record rise in visitors to the country.

According to the paper 2.8 million people are expected to make the trip to the Jewish state this year, an increase of 21 per cent on 2007.

The country's tourism minister told the Chronicle that Israel hopes to appeal to different types of tourist – be it religious pilgrims or those who are just looking for a more a traditional holiday.

The tourism sector in the country has also been boosted by Ryanair's announcement that it hopes to begin operating low-cost routes to the country.

Israel – which marks 60 years of existence in 2008 – features a wide range of attractions.

These include the Dead Sea – the saltiest sea on earth – as well as ancient biblical cities.

And the country can also offer beach holidays with its capital, Tel Aviv, situated on the shore of the Mediterranean.
