Getting in to the swing of things in Jamaica

While traditionally seen as a beach holiday destination, Jamaica also has a sporting side, new figures show.

One of the island's newspapers, the Jamaica Gleaner, reports that people visiting the country on golfing holidays injected around £100 million (J$14 billion) into its economy.

And the country is set to make itself even more attractive to golf fans as it looks to increase the number of courses on the island.

Speaking to the paper, Gordon Hutchinson president of the Jamaica Golf Association, said: "We already have a lot going in our favour. Sports tourism is the name of the game for the future. But it needs to be developed.

"Major events will draw large numbers of visitors and provide good promotional value for the country as a whole."

Spanish Colonists settled in Jamaica in the 16th century but the country was seized by England in 1655.

It gained full independence in 1962 when it withdrew from the Federation of the West Indies.
