Gambia highlights responsible tourism
Gambia highlights responsible tourismThe Gambia is promoting its credentials as a responsible tourism destination.

The tiny West African country has been popular with British holidaymakers for some years, thanks to its tropical climate, beautiful Atlantic beaches and exotic wildlife.

It is also in the same time zone as the UK, meaning that there is no jet lag after the six-hour flight to the capital, Banjul.

However, the former British colony is stressing the responsibility of its tourism.

Secretary of State for tourism and culture Angela Colley declared earlier this week: "The Gambia is fully committed to implement responsible tourism which is also in line with the objectives of the tourism development master plan."

For Ms Colley, that means ensuring that local people share in the benefits that tourism brings and that the environment is preserved and improved.

The Gambia has a growing eco-tourism sector, thanks to the enormous numbers of endemic bird species, which attract twitchers from the world over.

Eco-resorts, such as Makasutu culture forest, near to Brikama, are leading the way in creating jobs in rural areas, restoring native forest and preserving wildlife.

Visitors can expect to see wandering troops of baboons, along with amazing birdlife.
