Work has begun on the construction of the new Murcia airport. The new airport should make it easier for owners of holiday homes in the Murcia region of Spain to get to their property as well as attract new investors and tourists.

Due for completion in 2010, the new airport in Murcia is being built to cope with increasing passenger numbers at Murcia's San Javier Airport, explains local developer Casas de Lorca.

Mike Hamilton of Casas de Lorca said: "The development of the eagerly anticipated Murcia Airport will be excellent for the region as it will ease passenger numbers at the current airport as well as making travel easier and more convenient for both regular visitors and new passengers utilising the new facilities." Murcia is an attractive location for owners of holiday homes, and tourists, Hamilton added, citing "attractive scenery, rich history and good value for money" as draws.

The €266m project can only add to the popularity of Murcia, Hamilton concluded. San Javier Airport recorded a 22 per cent increase in passenger numbers from 2006 to 2007, welcoming over 2m passengers last year.
