Spain top holiday home destination among over-50s

Over half of people over 50 would consider buying abroad, and especially in Spain, according to new research.

Half of the respondents claimed that they would retire to their holiday home abroad, spending their twilight years dreaming in the sunshine.

Data collected by Saga suggests that the remaining 50 percent were more financially motivated, seeing the investment potential in owning a second property abroad.

And it's not only the beach homes in traditional tourist resorts that are popular now, as more Brits are moving to the mountains to escape the crowds.

"Spain has always been a popular choice for those looking to purchase a holiday home - its sunnier climes, relatively lower cost of living, cheaper property prices and its close proximity mean it is the perfect choice," said Saga's chief executive Andrew Goodsell.

Some investors were concerned about the language barrier and the unfamiliar legal procedures involved in buying abroad.

However, with the multitude of English-speaking lawyers in Spain, local advice should help overcome any potential problems.
