Only one in six pay Ireland second home tax

Only one in six owners have paid the second homes tax in Ireland. The deadline for the tax is September 30 and owners will be fined if they do not pay on time.
The latest figures from the country's City and County Managers' Association show that only 50,000 owners of holiday
cottages in Ireland have paid the 200 euros tax at present. According to RTE Business, there are an estimated 300,000 second homes in Ireland.
The annual tax was announced in Ireland's budget last October. Owners of second homes and investment properties who fail to pay before the deadline face a fine of 20 euros per property for each month they fall into arrears.
Ireland's ESB electricity board and The Private Residential Tenancies Board are believed to be sharing information with local authorities in order to identify properties liable for the tax. No letters or reminders have been sent informing owners of the tax. Instead, the onus is individuals to visit nppr.ie and pay online.
