Australian holiday home regulations 'must be enforced'

Officials in Australia have been called on to ensure that they enforce regulations applying to holiday homes.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports a campaign by the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) which seeks to enforce zoning and development restrictions affecting the short-term leasing of private homes in New South Wales.

Speaking to the paper David Elliot, deputy chief executive of the AHA, said that the laws needed to be enforced to ensure that tourists were protected.

However, Steve Martin, president of the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales, told the paper that the laws would amount to a ban on holiday rentals.

He added that the rights of both short-term tenants and owners needed to be considered.

Mt Martin said: "The holiday letting chapter will establish rules to protect the rights of all concerned – the owners, the renters and the local community."

New South Wales is home to a variety of attractions including numerous beaches, Australia's highest mountain and, of course, the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
