Carsberg Report urges shake-up of UK housing market
Today marks the publication of the Carsberg report, jointly sponsored by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the National Association of Estate Agents and the Association on Residential Letting Agents (ARLA). The NAEA has welcomed the report into the UK housing market and its recommendations.
The independent report, carried out by Sir Brian Carsberg, concluded that the market for buying and selling houses in the UK is not working, and laid down significant challenges for the property sector in order to rectify the situation.
The NAEA's chief executive Peter Bolton King said that the association "wholeheartedly endorses" the report's recommendation that all agents practising in the UK be registered by an official body and regulated by independent standards. He also went on to say that he welcomed the proposals regarding simplifying and speeding up the legal processes surrounding buying and selling property. Furthermore, the report recommended that Home Information Packs (HIPs) become a voluntary requirement.
The report's suggestions have been met with enthusiasm by the NAEA. Bolton King explained: "The estate agency sector in the UK is far from perfect and whilst the whole raison d'etre of the NAEA since its inception has been to promote and encourage best practice...we know there is still more to be done."
Bolton King concluded that the NAEA would take on board the recommendations to better its communication "with the people who matter most" in the industry; those buying and selling property.
