Choosing self-catering over hotels

If you're undecided as to whether to let your holiday home out to paying guests, consider the reasons travellers may choose self-catering holidays over hotels. Many seasoned travellers are already fans of holiday home rentals, so there's a well established market out there for you to promote your holiday home to.

Make sure you include all your unique selling points (USPs) such as private pools and open fires in your advert - what does your holiday home have that a hotel doesn't? Use the benefits of private rentals as selling points in your advert and this may entice more holidaymakers your way.

Here's why our holidaymakers tell us they choose self-catering over hotels:

It's cheaper. Hotels can be expensive, especially if you need to book several rooms for your family. Renting a holiday home direct from the owner means there are no middlemen taking commisions; savings that owners can pass onto guests.

More room. There'll be no need to cram all your belongings into one room or live out of a suitcase, when you can have a whole property to fill. Renting a holiday home provides individual bedrooms for guests and private communal space just for your group.

More freedom. Choose self-catering and you can set your own timetable - no chambermaids disturbing you, no set breakfast time, eat in or out... You can come and go as you please - all you need to do is check out on time.

More privacy Why share your holiday with other guests in a hotel, when you can have a whole home to yourself? Holidaymakers renting private homes can enjoy the luxury of a private pool, relax in their own garden or watch the sun set from the balcony - all without being disturbed by anyone else.

More character. Hotel rooms all look the same, so opt for a home from home instead. Often used by the owners for their own holidays and furnished as such, private rentals let you live like a local rather than spending all your time in a hotel complex.

Great for families. With just your family on site, there's no need to worry about sleeping children being disturbed by guests in the room next door. Having a whole house at your disposal, there's room enough for everyone to have their own space too - great for growing children who don't want to share their room. Holiday homes are often better equipped for younger travellers too, with many owners providing cots, highchairs and plenty more to lighten your load.
