Wildfires spreading across Greece & Mediterranean Europe
Wildfires are spreading across Europe. Italy, Spain, France, Croatia and Greece have all been affected by the blazes.

The wildfires caused 70 holidaymakers to be evacuated from a beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos yesterday, reports The Times. Experts are warning that rising wind speeds may spread the flames.

Firefighters are currently trying to control the fires along the northern Mediterranean. Tens of thousands of hectares of land have been destroyed by the blazes.

Yesterday's incident on Zakynthos saw some 20 tourists being carried from the beach on a boat by coastguards. Firefighters created a path through the flames, enabling the remaining holidaymakers to walk to safety.

Fires broke out in Croatia yesterday, for the first time this summer. Sardinia, Corsica, Marseille and Mallorca are among the areas that have also suffered from the flames.

Although forest fires are mainly triggered by high temperatures, some of the latest blazes have been blamed on arson. Special water-dropping aircraft are being used to tackle the flames.
