New Stansted to Athens flights debut
New Stansted to Athens flights debutHolidaymakers and holiday home owners looking for quick and easy access to Athens will be able to take advantage of a new air route from London Stansted to the Greek capital launched last week.

Greece attracts over 16 millions visitors from around the world each year, with official figures from the Greek tourism ministry noting that, in 2005, over six million people visited Athens alone.

Just 17 miles outside the historic capital city, Athens International Airport is the gateway to both mainland Greece and a necessary stop-off on the way to many of the islands. From last Thursday, Aegean Airlines is flying there from Stansted twice a day, all year round.

The fast-growing Greek airline reported that it had carried ten per cent more passengers in the first quarter of 2008 than in the same quarter last year, and it joins the ranks of airlines – from no frills to scheduled – flying from the UK to Athens.

Earlier this month, Aegean began operating flights from Athens to Kefalonia, the island made famous by Louis de Bernieres' novel, Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
