South of France keeps its cachet
Many Britons are still keen to buy in well-established resorts in the south of France, it was stressed this week. While the low prices offered by emerging markets in eastern Europe and farther-flung locations are attractive to some, the familiar charms, good weather and high standard of living to be had in France keep it at the top of the popularity stakes.
Nice and St Tropez have long been where members of the jet set have their second or third homes, and prices are correspondingly high.
Development is ongoing in many parts of the south of France, while the level of demand means that owners looking to sell or to rent their properties in these destinations can expect a good premium.
Simon Walker, sales director at Off Plan International, said: "A lot of British people look towards the South of France; the Cote d'Azur, places like that. We find most people looking around Nice and we also get people looking at St Tropez. It is still the traditional places; people do seem to be very much looking in that area."
Mr Walker added that Alpine destinations are also becoming more popular as investment spots.
"The Alps are also popular as winter is coming. It is bizarre how, when people are looking for investment, it can be quite seasonal. When it's hot, people are looking for places in the sun and the heat but in winter people are looking for the ski resorts," he added.
