Property investors look further afield

British property investors are getting more and more adventurous in their choices of destination.

While the familiar Spanish Costas and the south of France remain popular, countries such as Germany, Bulgaria and previously unknown parts of Italy are attracting investors.

Cheap flights to regional airports are making the “fly to let” phenomenon increasingly attractive, with property owners using their investments not only as holiday homes for part of the year, but also renting them out to tourists at other times.

Olivia Mullan, head of rentals at MRI Overseas Property, said: "Spain is a fantastic market which has long been a favourite with British holiday makers and investors. However other destinations are beginning to flourish - the property market in Berlin is quite lucrative."

Property in Berlin has traditionally been very different from many other parts of Germany, with the bulk of Berliners living in tower blocks constructed in the postwar era, following the virtual levelling of the entire city during the Second World War.
