A group of holiday home owners are donating breaks in their properties in aid of a fund to support victims of the L'Aquila earthquake. Italy Magazine has set up its own support fund and is exploring the idea of a charity auction.

Members of the magazine's online forum are offering holidays in their property, which they hope will then be auctioned off. The idea has proved popular with owners of holiday villas in Italy, who are also donating money to an online fund in support of the clean up operation following the earthquake in L'Aquila.

"I think this is a wonderful idea and we would be delighted [to offer a holiday]", said one contributor to the forum. The sentiment seems to be shared by many others: "Fantastic response so far....I am just overwhelmed by the generous people on this forum and how much you are all doing," wrote one of the event's organiser.

Other members have suggested opening the auction up to offer other experiences, allowing those without holiday lettings in Italy to contribute. The logistics of the auction are still being developed, but members of the site are keen that it goes ahead.

The online fund has so far generated over £5,000. The money will go to the British Red Cross, who will pass it on to the Italian Red Cross Emergency Appeal for Abruzzo.

Last week's earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy claimed over 200 lives. Approximately 17,000 were left homeless and much of the region's infrastructure was destroyed.
